What You Need To Know About House Training A Puppy

by Peter Clarke

Start off right when you are house training your puppy. Always bring the new puppy out to your backyard (or other designated place) and let the puppy stay there until he “goes.” Praise him when he is done. You should plan on taking your new friend out at least every two hours for this purpose.

When you are house and crate training your puppy, you should feed her in her crate, and then bring her outside very soon after she is done eating. Allow her some time to go. At first, you will have to carry her out and put her on the grass or ground so that she makes the right associations.

Enabling your puppy to feel grass under his feet when it’s time to go will reinforce the outside as an appropriate place to eliminate. You might need to help him along by walking around first.

Remember also to take your puppy outside again just before bedtime. If he cries during the night, it may be that he needs a bathroom break. Take him outside if that’s the case.

The puppy should go back in his crate after having gone outside for the last time of the day. Try to keep things quiet and calm at this time, so the puppy will go back to sleep and not want to play instead. After some time (a few days), your puppy will understand the routine and know that night time is for sleeping.

One common trick when house training is to have a piece of newspaper down on the floor if the puppy does go inside. Try and help the puppy to associate the newspaper with a place to go to the bathroom if it can’t make it outside. Slowly move the newspaper closer and closer to the door, and eventually the puppy will get the trick.

Always reward your puppy for good work, such as going to the bathroom outside. Be sure to praise him and give him lots of love and the occasional treat.

Remember to only reward the puppy only when they have been good. After time it will come natural to them and they will know what needs to be done for a treat.
