What To Expect With A Beagle Rescue Dog
Arguably, the most famous Beagle on Earth is Snoopy, the dog star of the long running American comic strip “Peanuts”. However, in the last fifty years, the characters frequently remark that Snoopy was bought from a puppy mill. If “Peanuts” had been created today, Charlie Brown would have gotten Snoopy from a Beagle rescue shelter. Beagles are intelligent, resilient, friendly, and will sneak up to lick your lips, just like Snoopy.
Most Beagle rescue dogs will not look like Snoopy and will not walk on their hind legs or hang out with really funny looking yellow birds. Most are tri-colored, meaning they are brown, white and black. There are those ticked with little blue spots. Sometimes this varies, and those that are mostly white with a few black spots like Snoopy are extremely rare. Beagle rescue dogs should be kept inside with the rest of your family and will not sleep on top of a doghouse.
A lot of time and energy has been devoted by the Beagle rescue center volunteers and any foster parents to learn all about all of their dogs up for adoption. They often will know the dog’s favorite toys and treats, which is a great way to get your Beagle rescue dog’s immediate attention. The dog will also be trained in how to behave inside of a home with common household noises. That’s less for you to worry about.
The Beagle rescue dog will not be free. The adoption fee is usually under $300. This is still a fraction of the cost of a very young puppy that still needs shots, neutering and training. The fee is also to discourage animal abusers and those who sell dogs to laboratories. Beagles are considered the first choice in animal experiments involving dogs, because of their agreeable nature, compact size and huge appetites. In fact, your Beagle rescue dog may have been rescued from a lab.
All Beagle rescue dogs are individuals. There will always be one who hasn’t read the official Beagle Information Handbook. But Beagles are highly trainable and will move mountains for food. There is no problem with a Beagle rescue dog that can’t be cured. Beagles are not known for viciousness to people or other dogs.
Your Beagle rescue center will be happy to help you with any problems. Just ask them.
The most common problems with Beagle rescue dogs are overeating, ripping apart trash for food, wandering and separation anxieties. Since Beagles are small, you should easily be able to keep food out of reach and spraying the trash can with bitter apple (used to deter chewing.) Never leave your Beagle unsupervised in the yard. Combined with regular exercise, this should cure wandering.
Leave a radio or television on, don’t make a big fuss when you leave and give an old t-shirt of yours with your smell on it to comfort the dog.
