The Type Of Behavior To Expect From Labradors
There are hundreds of breeds of dog that you can choose from, but Labradors are by far one of the most popular. They are very affectionate, caring and devoted dogs, and make for great pets. As with any other breed however, there are certain problems that are common among Labradors, and which you will want to be aware of before deciding to get one of these dogs yourself.
This is actually a very common behavioral problem with many breeds of dog. Dogs with separation anxiety can be very difficult to manage, and so this may be a difficult time for both you and your dog. It is important that you have patience and understand that there are things you can do to effectively deal with your dog’s separation anxiety problem. Of course the easiest thing would be to stay home all the time with your dog but because this is obviously not the case you will have to figure something more permanent.
There are a few tips that can be helpful in dealing with your dog’s separation anxiety problem, but the first thing you should try is quite simple. Get them out for more exercise, even if this just means taking them for a walk around the block. The more physically active they are the better they are going to feel, and therefore the less likely they will be to have any behavioral problems.
There are a few things that you may want to try at first to see if you can correct the problem on your own. Getting them out for more exercise is one of the first things you should try, even if you just take them for a walk around the block. Gradually lengthening the periods of your absence is another good idea, as this will allow the dog to start understanding that it is not such a big deal that you are gone and therefore not make such a big fuss.
You may feel bad the first couple of times but this will help because your dog may not even notice that you are gone at all, and even when they do, when they realize that they are not getting extra attention beforehand they will stop caring so much and not making a fuss when you do leave.
Other than these methods there are also things that you can do to help Labradors overcome separation anxiety problems. One idea is to use anti-anxiety medications to calm your dog, but these medications should only be used in the most serious cases and will need to be prescribed by the veterinarian.
Also keep in mind that although they may be effective at treating your dog’s behavioral problems, the drugs should not be considered as a long-term solution.
You also need to realize that no matter what medication you are giving your dog, this cannot be deemed as a long-term solution, so you will need to work together with your veterinarian in order to come up with a lifelong plan to deal with your dog’s behavioral problems.
